WHAT IT MEANS TO ME TO BE A "BEAR". What is a Bear? I believe it should be considered as the "masculine" side of any gay community and doesn't necessarily include any particular characteristic, i. e. chest hair, facial hair, body size or age. Personally, I identify with both the leather and bear communities and I enjoy the various social activities they present. I often attend "Bear Events" and "Bear Theme" weekends most often at TimberFell Lodge. Over the years, I have made many close friends that are easily identifiable with the Bear community.
I adhere to the idea that being a "Bear" is an attitude. Even within the community itself, it can be misleading with such terms as "Polar Bear", "Bear Admirer", "Grizzly Bear", "Otter", "Cub", "Daddy Bear", "Pocket Bear", "Wolf" and even the term "Bear" itself. Otherwise, how else would the greeting often given to a Bear such as "Grr.r..rrr" and "Woof" be understood.
